授業の方法

Joseph Conrad’s 1901 novel Heart of Darkness occupies a singular place in Anglophone literature. Depending on the viewpoint, it is either a masterpiece of early literary modernism, or exasperatingly racist and self-indulgent. The extremity of these viewpoints lies behind the novel’s prominent place in Anglophone literary history. We will read the novel slowly and carefully, then as the course progresses we will discuss the novel in terms of certain critical essays and appraisals of the novel, and in the larger contexts of literary modernism, narratology, postcolonialism, and its broader influence on Anglophone culture, particularly Coppola’s film Apocalypse Now! which we will screen and discuss at the end of the semester. Each class will feature short lectures, discussions, and presentations.
