授業テーマ
This class is subtitled The Roots of Postcolonialism 2: Things Fall Apart. This seminar will concern what is considered by many to be the first postcolonial novel, Things Fall Apart by Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe.
授業のねらい・到達目標
To continue to engage students in the key issues of postcolonialism; improving abilities in reading and interpreting complex texts in English; participating in discussions; and in writing critical essays.
授業の方法
Published in 1958, two years before Nigeria declared independence from Great Britain, Things Fall Apart is set in the 1890s and portrays the clash between Nigeria’s white colonial government and the traditional culture of the indigenous Igbo people. In telling the story of Okonkwo, a prosperous and revered man, the novel portrays the complex, advanced social institutions and artistic traditions of Igbo culture prior to its contact with Europeans. Yet the novel also avoids European stereotypes: the white characters are as human as the Africans. In this seminar we will read the novel slowly and carefully, rounding out our discussions with presentations on background history, cultural knowledge, and criticism. We will also read Joyce Cary’s short novel Mister Johnson, which Achebe claimed was the novel that made him want to write Things Fall Apart
事前学習・授業計画コメント
The schedule is flexible: we will take more time with Things Fall Apart if necessary, and possibly read Mister Johnson earlier in the semester if students prefer.
