授業テーマ The city and the country in English literature.
授業のねらい・到達目標 Students will be able to trace tropes, themes, ideas, images, ideologies relating to cities in English literature, and how the ‘country’ is in a sense formed by the city.
授業の方法 By reading shorter excerpts from a variety of fictional and non-fictional genres, and from a variety of literary and historical traditions (including works in translation that have influenced English literature), we will explore how English literature has responded to the formation of cities, how it has contributed to the city-country divide, and how it reflects and represents the socio-cultural conditions of city spaces and city life. Thus a final essay question might have students compare an ancient or classical text, a theoretical text, and a newer text in order to identify and explain similarities and significances.
