授業テーマ What strikes you as different between the people you grew up with as a child, the people around you in Japan now, and the people in countries you might visit in the future? Are those differences personal, cultural or both? This “Intercultural communication” course helps you understand the impact of culture on the way we think, behave and communicate. Please bring curiosity and an open mind as well as your textbooks ;-)
授業のねらい・到達目標 Do you know where your blind-spots are?! We look at cultural values from different points of view to increase self- and other-awareness.To create intercultural synergy we need to be able to voice our own opinion, consider other people's different opinions and create common ground.
授業の方法 Mini, interactive lectures combine with student-led discussion. Each week: Students will read excerpts from the core text and write a culture journal. Journal entries (2+ per week) will use intercultural communication theory as a lens to view the world around you. Each term: Students take turns to present one Chapter of the core text and facilitate a discussion on that Chapter in small groups/pairs.
履修条件 ・同一教員・同一時限で前期と後期を対にして履修すること。
・前期の初回授業時に受講希望者が定員を超過した場合、人数調整をするので、初回の授業に必ず出席すること。履修の許可を得た上で、履修登録をすること。

教科書 Jan Nederveen Pieterse, Globalization and Culture: Global Melange:Globalization, Rowman & Littlefield, 2015, 3rd  edition
The publication date of this 3rd edition is planned but has not yet been released on Amazon. I would prefer to use this 3rd edition as it includes a new section on China. However, if it is not available in time for the 2nd semester, please order the 2nd edition. That will be fine.

Participation = Proactively contributing to discussion, facilitating others' ability to present and discuss.
13th Week in-class test = Meta-learning reflection on journal entries
Report = Group presentation on core chapter & facilitation of student discussion on chapter.
Examination = 2+ Journal entries a week relating course material to personal opinion and incidents in the real world.
