授業テーマ This course builds academic writing skills from the paragraph to the research essay level. The content for writing topics is current issues (e.g., global warming or the digital divide) and various types of academic writing are looked at (e.g., narratives, summaries, opinions, reports and research essays).
授業のねらい・到達目標 The goal of this course is to develop students’ academic writing skills. Students will be able to analyze currents issues and write about them in various academic writing genres to explain their opinions on the issues and to research experts’ opinions on the issues using web-based resources. The final goal is for students to write an acceptable academic research essay.
授業の方法 This is an academic writing course that focuses on students’ academic writing needs. Each class will introduce a specific writing genre or target (e.g., thesis statements or topic sentences), will involve student pair-work discussing writing topics and progress and, will finish with doing academic writing. Students will learn to take notes, as well as practice planning, writing, and revising different types of writing about their topics. They will also learn to use web-based resources to develop their academic writing skills.

成績評価の方法及び基準 平常点(15%)、レポート(35%)、授業参画度(10%)、Comparison Assignment(20%)、Opinion Assignment(20%)
Students are assessed by completing the two assignments (the first comparison 25%, the second opinion 25%) and the research essay (35%), by degree of participation in class (15%) and attendance (10%). The criteria on participation in class are active participation and contribution to discussions.
