授業テーマ Azuma no kuni, the country of the East, used to be considered wild and uncivilized, and it was geographically as well as culturally opposite Kyoto, the capital in the West. The conception of Azuma no kuni drastically changed when shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616) established a new political center there in 1590, calling it Edo. About two hundred and fifty years later, the Emperor transferred his residence to the East, and called the city Tokyo, the eastern capital. The devastation of the great earthquake in 1923 and of air raids during the Second World War greatly transformed Tokyo’s cityscape. And yet, its historical layers are still reflected in its current structure, function, and dynamism.
授業のねらい・到達目標 This course explores metropolitan Tokyo, particularly focusing on such historical layers and architecture that comprises the cityscape. The course will begin with a review of the historical development of Edo/ Tokyo up to 1930. In the following weeks, each week will focus on one area of the city. Students will be introduced to major buildings in the area along with their historical contexts. In addition to the actual sites of Tokyo, the images of Tokyo reflected in writings, paintings, prints, photographs, and movies will be examined.
授業の方法 The course aims to familiarize students with the historical as well as architectural aspects of metropolitan Tokyo. Further, through critical examination of the images of Tokyo, students will be expected to achieve a profound understanding of the city.
事前学修・事後学修,授業計画コメント Preview of the area via maps and guidebooks, as well as through one’s own research via the Internet, etc. are indispensable. In addition, students are strongly encouraged to visit the sites in advance. Students will be assigned to give a short presentation on individual areas. In addition, students need to submit a short reaction note about the session every week.
