授業テーマ An introduction to postcolonial African literature in English.
授業のねらい・到達目標 This course introduces students to one of postcolonial Africa’s most important novels, Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, as well as key issues in African literature, history, culture, and identity in essays by African writers.
授業の方法 By reading and discussing Chinua Achebe’s masterpiece Things Fall Apart, one of the world’s most widely read novels, students will develop a deeper understanding of how cultures evolve, how historical changes affect both a community and an individual, and how literature represents these changes. After reading the novel, we will read an essay by Achebe on how African writers can make the English language their own, and a challenge to that idea in an essay by Ngugi wa Thiong’o. We will conclude with an essay by a migrant African writer, Buchi Emecheta, concerning how African literature struggles to define itself. In addition to readings and discussions, students will prepare short presentations, and write a final essay.
