英米文学演習１（3年生用）

授業テーマ	Students will be introduced to the classical tradition, a branch of cultural studies.
授業のねらい・到達目標	The main goal is to read the ancient Greek myth of Heracles/Hercules, and analyze how and why it reappears throughout history. Its reception in British literature will be the major focus, particularly in the collection of detective stories The Labors of Hercules, a volume of the Hercule Poirot mystery series by Agatha Christie, along with its television dramatization. From oral tradition through print to video, therefore, students will be able to trace the evolution and versatility of the Heracles/Hercules story as it appears in such different media and genres.
授業の方法	Regular homework will ensure proper preparation for each class, while retention of all the material covered will be evaluated via frequent quizzes.
事前学修・事後学修，授業計画コメント	Students will also be required to write an essay comparing one of the Hercule Poirot mysteries not covered in class with its corresponding mythical labor of Heracles.
