授業概要 | Students will continue to be exposed to the classical tradition. The reception of this idea in American culture will be the focus, particularly within Henry James’s “Daisy Miller,” Edith Wharton’s “Roman Fever,” and the movie Dead Poets Society. |

授業のねらい・到達目標 | Can analyze of a major theme in Western culture, carpe diem (Latin for “seize the day”), coined by the Roman poet Horace. Can identify its popularity throughout cultural history. 授業の方法 | Regular homework will ensure proper preparation for each class. Students must study all the material covered is the previous class for weekly quizzes. They will also be required to write an essay based on the carpe diem theme. Finally, they should spend 1 hour to complete preparation and homework for each class. |
