授業概要 This semester focuses on prose fiction. Prose means language that is neither poetic nor lyric; in other words, prose is the language of daily life. However, when used in fiction, prose has the power to move and inspire. By learning how to closely read and write about prose fiction, and by developing reading, writing and interpretation skills learned in the Spring semester, the Fall semester will prepare students to start writing their Graduation Theses as soon as the next academic year starts.

授業の方法 After reading and discussing the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” students will undertake careful and thorough writing practice of the elements, structures, and purposes of literary analysis essays. Each part of the essay – introduction, body, conclusion, citations, works cited list, etc. – will be reviewed and explored in detail. There will also be instruction and practice in doing library research, finding appropriate sources, using research sources in essays, and coming up with a topic for the Graduation Thesis. Class meetings will again be casual. Students will be encouraged to ask questions, make comments, and discuss what they think is important. There will be homework, and students will have to read and/or write something almost every week. The homework assignments will be flexible, and will be tailored to the pace and interests of the class. Students are required to do the readings and complete the homework assignments in order to prepare for class. Students should spend 1 hour to complete the preparation and homework for each class.
