授業概要 Students will be introduced to the classical tradition, a branch of cultural studies.
授業のねらい・到達目標 Can read the ancient Greek myth of Heracles/Hercules.
Can analyze how and why it reappears throughout history.
Can focus on that myth in British literature, particularly in the collection of detective stories The Labors of Hercules, a volume of the Hercule Poirot mystery series by Agatha Christie, along with its adaptation.
Can trace the evolution and versatility of the Heracles/Hercules story as it appears in such different media and genres, from oral tradition through print to video.

授業の方法 Regular homework will ensure proper preparation for each class. Retention of all the material covered will be evaluated via weekly quizzes. Students will also be required to write an essay comparing one of the Hercule Poirot mysteries not covered in class with its corresponding mythical labor of Heracles. Finally, they should spend 1 hour to complete preparation and homework for each class.
