学期 前期 履修区分 必修
授業概要 The Spring semester will 1) build on research essay skills learned in Academic English in order to prepare students to write a graduation thesis; and 2) give students the opportunity to write and stage their own short drama, along with an analysis of that drama. This also prepares students to write a graduation thesis because through creating and analyzing a literary work they will gain a deeper understanding of the purpose, effect, complexity, and pleasure of literature. This zemi is aimed at students who are serious about wanting to improve their English writing (and speaking, listening, reading), who want to understand literature more deeply, and who aim to write a graduation thesis in English.
授業のねらい・到達目標 Students who successfully compete the course will be able to, in English,
• formally analyze various poems and poetic styles
• identify the subject and attitude of poems
• analyze poems in terms of form and content, with an understanding that this is always necessarily subjective
• write an analytical paragraph about a poem, focusing on making an argumentative claim, and using appropriate evidence to support and analyze that claim
• formally, structurally, and impressionistically analyze a play
• through performance tasks, gain a feel for the rhythm, intonation, and diction of contemporary English drama
• write a short drama and perform it
• analyze and explain the drama dramaturgically and thematically

授業の方法 Overall, this seminar will build on the skills you learned and practiced in Academic English – reading and writing. The spring semester will focus on poetry and drama. Learning how to read, write and enjoy poetry will help students to appreciate not only how a poem expresses deep feelings and ideas, but also how intonation, rhythm, and rhyme combine to make meaning. Drama is much the same: the language of play we will read, Proof, is the language of daily life; moreover, the drama of Proof opens windows into the dramas of daily life. Finally, learning how to read and write these forms, and to write analytical responses, will help students to develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between literary creation and interpretation. Class meetings will be casual. Students will be encouraged to ask questions, make comments, and discuss what they think is important. There will be homework, and students will have to read and/or write something almost every week. But the homework assignments will be flexible, and will be tailored to the pace and interests of the class. Students are required to do the readings and complete the homework assignments in order to prepare for class; expect at least 2-3 hours per week of homework.
