授業概要 Introduction to the regional geography of Japan
授業のねらい・到達目標 This course is intended to provide a geographical overview of Japan to those who are unfamiliar with Japan's regional geography. An overall picture will be presented by looking at the historical, cultural, economic, and social features. Students may be able to acquire the following knowledge and skill: geographic way of thinking, geographic features of Japan, geographic issues to be solved, and Japan and Japanese in globalization.
授業の方法 Lecture materials are provided via Blackboard. A short assignment is given after each lecture. A research paper on a selected topic needs to be completed by the end of the semester.

1 Introduction: Geographic method and viewpoint
Geographic method and viewpoint will be explained in order to study Japan.

Foreigners living in Japan and the influence of foreign culture will be overviewd.

Rural areas will be examined by looking at depopulation, decline of agriculture, rural tourism, and commercialization of rural spaces.
