授業概要 In this course students will develop English academic skills in reading comprehension, writing, listening comprehension, note taking, group discussion , and public speaking. By focusing on lectures in academic areas such as psychology, linguistics, public health, art history, engineering, biology, and so on, students will be able to listen for main ideas presented in lectures , take notes and summarize key information.
授業のねらい・到達目標 Students will be expected to learn and master the vocabulary from the Coxhead Academic Word List (AWL). Additionally, students will be able to develop discussion strategies such as asking for and giving opinions, asking for clarification and confirmation, paraphrasing, changing the topic, and reaching a consensus by participating in weekly group discussions. Finally, students would be able to develop research techniques By presenting two 5 minutes speeches based on topics from the text . All the skills will be measurable, achievable, and specific to the topics presented in the text .
この科目は文理学部のDP及びCPの2, 3, 6 に対応している。
授業の方法 There are 12 units in the class textbook and each unit is designed around an academically themed lecture presented on DVD. Each unit includes a variety of academic activities for both vocabulary acquisition, listening comprehension, note-taking, group discussion, and presentation strategies. Most of these activities will be done in the classroom; however, students will be expected to prepare for these activities before the class is held. Therefore, students will be expected to do 1 to 2 hours of homework per week to include learning vocabulary lists and submitting the key lecture notes for a grade. At the start of each class, students will be divided into 2 to 3 member teams. These teams will work together to answer textbook questions, or questions asked by the teacher or complete tasks presented in the textbook. Teams will be awarded participation points which will constitute their weekly participation grade . Each class also includes student led group discussions, so to successfully participate and contribute to the discussions, homework must be done prior to the class meeting time. Most speaking activities will be done in pairs or in groups of 3. Students will be graded for these discussions by the teachers observation and use of feedback rubrics. At the end of each unit there will also be a short Unit listening test and proficiency assessment test which will be graded. Lecture notes and unit vocabulary homework will also be assessed and included as part of the student’s grade. Students will also research, organize, practice and perform two 5 to 8 minute speeches based on a topic from the textbook. The objective is to cover all 12 units over the course of 2 semesters.
