授業概要 The course is an introduction to Japan's socio-economic and regional geography.
授業のねらい・到達目標 This course is intended to provide a geographical overview of Japan. In the second semester, we focus on Japan’s history, culture, demography and socio-economic features, and highlight their regional diversity. In an interactive class format, students will acquire an overall picture of Japan’s diverse socio-economic activities and their regional distribution, and of the major challenges faced by Japan and the Japanese in the 21st century in terms of demographic, social and economic sustainability.
この科目は日本大学教育憲章ルーブリック(A-1-1、A-2-1)に対応しています。
Students will be able to: master the geographic, systemic way of thinking and geographic approach (A-1-1), understand the regional socio-economic and cultural characteristics of Japan and grasp the overall picture of the country (A-2-1) and to analyze geographical phenomena from different perspectives and at different scales (A-1-1).
この科目は文理学部(学士(地理学)のDP及びCPDP1, DP2, CP1, CP2に対応しています。
授業の形式 講義
授業の方法 Lectures are held in the designated classroom; lecture materials are provided via Canvas. A short assignment is given before each lecture. Based on the assignment, the topic is discussed at the beginning of each week's lecture. A research paper on a selected topic will be completed by the end of the semester.
Students not able to attend face-to-face lectures are supposed to study by themselves using lecture materials provided via Canvas. Questions will be answered in the classroom.

A brief historical overview from the ancient time to the present will be presented.

Population growth, demographic transition, population structure and distribution will be surveyed.

3 Japanese diaspora; foreigners and foreign culture in Japan
The pattern of Japanese overseas migration from the late nineteenth century on will be examined. Foreigners living in Japan and the influence of foreign culture will be surveyed.

6 Satoyama: Japan’s traditional rural systems
Japan’s traditional rural landscapes and their evolution will be examined.

7 Changing rural Japan
Rural areas will be examined by looking at depopulation, decline of agriculture, commodification of rural spaces and recent changes in the rural industries: agriculture, forestry, rural tourism.
