application in modern context analyzed.
授業のねらい・到達目標
Objective: At the end of the courses, the students shall be able:
         1. to identify the unique function of time and
             space in Noh theatre.
         2. to discuss how contemporary writers adapted
Noh’s classical use of time and space

or a modern Noh play based on the Noh theatre’s classical
             interpretation of time and space.
授業の方法
This class shall start with an introduction of the classical Japanese literature of Noh. Zeami’s treatises and his two plays, 'Kantan' and 'Tomonaga' will be read and discussed extensively in relation to its birth and historical development, Some of the modern plays which adapted the concept of time and space in the classical Noh world (i.e. such as that of Yukio Mishima’s) will be read, their philosophical content, literary style explored and its application in modern context analyzed. Finally, each student will write a creative work—a short story or a short modern play in English and to perform it in a classroom situation.
