授業テーマ This course will thematize an anthropological approach to Japanese popular culture. Students will delve into social mechanisms, cultural practices, and historical processes that set the stage for conspicuous trendy phenomena that make up JPC to emerge, spread, and become part of Japanese national competence. Emphasizing cases will include courtesanship, kabuki acting, manga, anime, J-Pop and J-Hip musical genres, pop idolatry, Takarazuka revue, otaku syndrome, and Cawaii revolution.
授業のねらい・到達目標 This course is designed to enhance anthropological understandings of JPC, as well as how to approach JPC.
授業の方法 Weekly readings and extra-curricular investigations are the must! Students will be equipped with conceptual, theoretical and analytical knowhows in class. Building on these foundations, each student will design a research project, conduct fieldwork, and demostrate the fruit of labor in class.
履修条件 Students willing to enroll do not need to be competent in anthropology (or any relative fields of social science) at the outset, but they must be prepared to acquire investigative skills quickly. Those who are capably willing to conduct a series of serious investigations on JPC are welcome. On the contrary, the course is no place to "pop around," so students who are simply curious should avoid the course, or think twice in terms of whether they can thoroughly undertake the task uncovering those deeply rooted and highly complicated phenomena that constitute JPC!
事前学修・事後学修,授業計画コメント Group project will be placed at the core of students' assigment, so students who enroll in this class should be ready to work outside of the class as well. Details will be provided at project workshop hours.
