---|---|
授業のねらい・到達目標 | In this semester, we will analyze a major theme in Western culture, "carpe diem" (Latin for “seize the day”), which was coined by the Roman poet Horace, and its popularity throughout history. The reception of this idea in American literature will be the main focus, particularly within the short works of Henry James and Edith Wharton, along with the movie "Dead Poets Society". |
授業の方法 | From ancient poetry through modern prose to film, therefore, students will be able to trace the evolution and versatility of the carpe diem leitmotif as it appears in such different genres and media. |
事前学修・事後学修,授業計画コメント | Regular homework will ensure proper preparation for each class, while retention of all the material covered will be evaluated via frequent quizzes. Students will also be required to write a report based on a subject related to this course, but on a specific topic of his/her choice. |
