授業テーマ The theme of this class is Explaining and Expressing Your Opinion on topics relevant to international society in the twenty-first century.
授業のねらい・到達目標 The course will cover three fields of Explanation and Opinion. The first semester covered Group Discussion. The second semester will concentrate on Public Speaking/Presentation and Debate.

In Public Speaking/Presentation you will practice

• forming clear opinions; conducting research on debate topics; organising, constructing, supporting and delivering arguments effectively

In Debate. you will reuse those techniques and supplement them with

• organising and constructing refutations
• defending your ideas against your debating opponents
授業の方法 Students will prepare and practice Public Speaking/Presentation. either individually or in groups, depending on the size of the class. Debate will be in groups of four (2 pairs of 2 people). Debate is the most complex of the three fields covered in this course, so sufficient time will be made available for pairwork preparation and practice throughout the semester.
The techniques in both parts of the course are taught on a flow basis, and it will be important to do the homework prescribed in order to take the techniques forward in the following class. The group and pairwork nature of Debate, especially, makes it important that students attend every week, so as not to inconvenience their partner(s), and to make up for any techniques missed through absence on their own.
