授業の形態 | In principle, this class will be conducted in-person. However, to accommodate exchange students who might be unable to enter Japan, this class may be switched to synchronous interactive classes via Zoom, conducted at the class scheduled time. The format depends on the students’ status and the ongoing situation regarding the pandemic restrictions in Japan. Please always keep updated via Blackboard and do not hesitate to send an email to the professor if you have any questions. Blackboard ID:20223095 |

授業概要 | Japan has a long and rich history of literature written by women, but how are literary works different when written by women? Does the gender of the author really matter? This course explores the paradoxical position of female authors within Japanese literature and discusses the invention of a "female language" in Japan. By reading literary Japanese texts in English, we compare and contrast the specificity of Japanese female writings with other literatures and analyse the translatability of gender expression across languages. |
授業のねらい・到達目標 | The course's purpose is to discuss key contemporary issues around gender from the perspective of Japanese literature. Students will learn about female writings in Japan and should achieve a general understanding of the concepts of gender, feminism, and gendered language. Students should be able to discuss in English some of the key problematics surrounding the topic of gender and literature. (A-2-2, A-3-2, A-6-2). |
