授業概要 Academic English 4 develops academic writing skills learned and practiced in Academic English 1-3, and on developing skills in reading, interpreting, discussing and writing about literature.
授業のねらい・到達目標 The main aim of Academic English is to prepare English majors for the third-year Graduation Thesis Research Seminar and the fourth year Graduation Thesis. Academic English 4 focuses on learning how to write a research essay, and then on how to analyze short stories in order to write another research essay on literature. Specifically, by the end of the semester students should be able to:
-develop, organize, and structure a research essay (A-3-2、A-6-2、A-7-2、A-8-2)
-write a proper thesis statement (A-3-2、A-6-2、A-7-2、A-8-2)
-write proper topic sentences (A-3-2、A-6-2、A-7-2、A-8-2)
-support arguments using research sources (A-3-2、A-6-2、A-7-2、A-8-2)
-make accurate generalizations (A-3-2、A-6-2、A-7-2、A-8-2)
-edit a research essay (A-3-2、A-6-2、A-7-2、A-8-2)

この科目は文理学部（学士（文学））のディプロマポリシーDP3、DP6、DP7、DP8、及び、カリキュラムポリシーCP3、CP6、CP7、CP8、に対応している。
A-3-2既存の知識にとらわれることなく, 言語現象や歴史的事象を論理的・批判的に説明することができる。
A-6-2親しい人々とコミュニケーションを取り, 専門的知識について正しく説明することができる。
A-7-2学修活動において, 積極的にリーダーシップを発揮し, 他者と協働して作業をすることができる。
A-8-2自分の学修経験の振り返りを継続的に行い, 分析することができる。
授業の形式 演習
授業の方法 In the Writing Unit, students learn the basics of writing a 3- to 4-page research essay. In the Literature Unit, students read three short stories, complete vocabulary and grammar tasks, then perform interpretive tasks that require students to respond to the theme and conflicts. Finally, they write a research essay that compares two of the stories. Feedback will be provided in class or when assignments are returned.

事前に授業担当教員に許可された者については、代替措置として、Canvas LMS に配信する課題を提出する。そのほか詳しいことは状況に応じて別途指示する。
履修条件 英文学科２年生はクラス指定科目。

英文学科の２年生以外の学生（再履修および、転科、転籍、転部、編入を含む）は抽選によって振り分けられた者のみ履修可。
抽選の詳細は年度初めガイダンス（３月末／４月頭）にて案内する。

英文学科以外の学生は、開講されているクラスから選び、各学期の初回授業で担当教員の許可を得て履修すること。
原則、前学期と後学期で異なる教員を受講すること。
