授業概要 A research essay is, basically, an argument that uses as evidence information and ideas found in doing research on the topic. It is the ultimate aim of all academic writing. For the writer of a research essay, the goal is to challenge, broaden, and deepen their reader’s ideas and assumptions. Another way to think of a research essay: it can teach your reader how to think in a different way by presenting them with knowledge and ideas in an organized, thoughtful and creative argument.
授業のねらい・到達目標 The overall aim of this semester is straightforward: it is to prepare to write a research essay, or, in other words, a graduation thesis. At the end of the semester, you should be able to, in English:
• effectively and creatively analyze and interpret a fictional text
• write effective analytical paragraphs
• find and integrate evidence from original and research sources
• give short presentations on content, context, and interpretation
• write a thesis-based research essay using evidence to support an argument

授業の形式 ゼミ
授業の方法 In the first half of the semester we will work on how to write an effective analysis and interpretation of a short story. In the second half of the semester we will turn our attention to writing a research essay that argues for how to interpret a short story. Students are required to do the readings and complete the homework assignments in order to prepare for class. Students are expected to actively participate in class, as the teacher will ask many questions, and there will be group discussions requiring students to express their ideas. Perfect English is not required! Students who try their best, and commit themselves to active participation, will get the most out of this class. Feedback will be provided in class.

事前に授業担当教員の許可を得た者については、遠隔での参加を認める場合がある。Canvas LMS に配信する課題を提出することで代替措置とする。そのほか詳しいことは状況に応じて別途指示する。
