授業概要 The Anthropocene

This interdisciplinary seminar deals with the fact that humanity is now a great disruptive force on earth, manipulating the earth system of the biosphere (Gaia).
The Anthropocene is a much-discussed topic in the German academic and cultural landscape, where the connection between ecological and social issues is brought into the political debate especially by the Green Party. The researcher Paul J. Crutzen, who popularized the concept of the Anthropocene, was the director of the Atmospheric Chemistry Department at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany, from 1980 to 2000. The Japanese philosopher Kohei Sato was able to present his theses on the need for degrowth communism in view of the dangers of climate change in Berlin 2023 to a huge audience at the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. Other key figures in the debate, such as philosopher Bruno Latour and physicist Hans-Joachim (John) Schellnhuber, have appeared for influential debates at Berlin's "Haus der Kulturen der Welt". Schellnhuber is the founding director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), which is now headed by the Swedish climate researcher Johan Rockström. The Germanist Eva Horn (University of Vienna, Austria) is known for her interventions in the debate about the Holocene from a humanities perspective.
授業のねらい・到達目標 The key question of the seminar is how human activities affect the earth system. In particular, the course attempts to understand the causes and consequences of global warming and climate change. We will discuss what humanity must do to avert a catastrophe. From a literary studies perspective, the question arises as to whether literary texts (or films) can also make a contribution in this context.
授業の形式 研究、ゼミ
授業の方法 The students watch videos of lectures given by world famous scientists and scholars from the humanities. They will discuss their theses and suggestions for action.
課題の提出方法やフィードバックの方法は、授業内で説明する。
履修条件 Language of instruction will be English. This is an interdisciplinary seminar, addressing not only students from the humanities but also students from the sciences. International students are particularly welcome to this course. Aus der Germanistik gab es in den letzten Jahren an meinen Lehrveranstaltungen in der graduate school auf Deutsch über die Nazi-Diktatur, über postkoloniale Studien, Insularität und Exotismus leider nur sporadisch Interessenten. Deshalb wird diese Lehrveranstaltung auf Englisch angeboten. Ich bitte um Ihr Verständnis. Wenn Sie einen Konversationskurs besuchen möchten, sind Sie eingeladen, sich eine ihrer sprachlichen Kompetenz entsprechende Lehrveranstaltung bei mir im undergraduate-Bereich auszusuchen.
