この授業は、原則として対面式で行われる。必ずCanvasLMSのアップテートを参考にし、分からないことがあるときは教員に直接メールで取り合わせをすること。
授業概要 This class introduces the fundamentals of Japanese Studies in English. First we will discuss important concepts around the idea of "Japanese Studies," learning about stereotypes, the different methods of learning about Japan, and different critical and theoretical frameworks for studying Japan. Then we will begin our study of the different eras of modern Japanese history and culture, reading one short story in English translation from each era and discussing the major historical moments of the era.

This class is comprised of lecture and discussion, so students will be able to hone their English listening, speaking, and writing skills via the study of Japanese history and culture.
授業のねらい・到達目標 The aim of this course is to gain an overview of modern Japanese history and culture by reading and analyzing short primary source historical documents in English translation, short stories and works of literature, and brief academic texts. By the end of the class, students will be able to:

1. Discuss major events in modern Japanese history
2. Read and discuss important short stories by Japanese authors in English translation
3. Question stereotypes about Japanese culture, literature, and history
4. Be prepared for deeper inquiry into Japanese history and culture

授業の形式 講義
授業の方法 授業の方法 Students learn to read texts in English and communicate on the topic. Via CanvasLMS, students have access to reading materials and PowerPoint slides. Students do weekly in-class writing exercises and need to submit short assignments on Canvas every 2 weeks (quizzes and short essays on the reading materials). Students need to attend the in-person classes and participate in the live discussions.
The final essay also needs to be submitted via Canvas.
対面授業では、クラスディスカッションやグループワークに参加する。CanvasLMSを通して教材を配信する(テキストとPowerPointスライド)が、受講⽣はその教材を学修し、所定の⽅法で課題の解答やエッセイーを提供する。対面参加ができない場合は、事前に教員の許可を得てズームでのリモート参加と課題提出が可能。フィードバックは毎回CanvasLMSにて提供される。
