授業概要 This seminar will examine relationships between American literature, places and identities in the 20th century. American literature is marked both by historical change and a strong regional and geographical sense of place. Natural, rural, and urban spaces both shape and are shaped by literature. This seminar will explore these relationships between text, history and place by closely reading and discussing Ragtime, which could be called a postmodern novel, and short stories from Jhumpa Lahiri’s Interpreter of Maladies, which focus on the lives of Asian immigrants to America. Another focus of this course is on writing literary analysis and criticism in English. In addition to readings and discussions, students will prepare short in-class presentations, and write a final essay.
授業のねらい・到達目標 In addition to learning about American literature’s relationships between history, place and text, this class aims to improve abilities in reading and interpreting complex texts in English, participating in discussions, and in writing essays.
授業の形式 講義、演習
授業の方法 Classes will consist of discussions of the readings, with occasional short student presentations. In addition to readings and discussions, students will write a final essay and give a final presentation.
