授業概要 The Fall semester will build on skills learned in the Spring semester in order to prepare students to write a graduation thesis. More specifically, this seminar will focus on how to write an interpretive essay that incorporates research about a short story. This zemi is aimed at students who are serious about wanting to improve their English writing (and speaking, listening, reading), who want to understand literature more deeply, and who aim to write a graduation thesis in English.
授業のねらい・到達目標 Students who successfully compete the course will be able to, in English,
• write an analytical paragraph about a story, focusing on making an argumentative claim, and using appropriate evidence to support and analyze that claim
• formally, structurally, and impressionistically analyze a short story
• integrate textual evidence, such as quotations, into a literary analysis essay
• identify the theme of a literary text, and write a theme statement
• develop a literary analysis essay through writing a series of analytical claims that form a logical argument, in the form of outlines and drafts
• peer review and discuss themes, analytical claims, outlines and drafts
• write an introduction to a literary analysis research essay
• develop a literary analysis research essay with critical and historical sources

授業の方法 Again using the textbook The International Story, the first section of the course will work through the basics of writing an interpretive essay. The next section will concentrate on selecting, analyzing and incorporating evidence into an essay. We will then spend two weeks working on how to quote, document and cite sources. The final six weeks will be a writing workshop in which students will work on a final research essay that interprets, analyzes and explains one of the stories in the textbook.
Class meetings will be casual. Students will be encouraged to ask questions, make comments, and discuss what they think is important. There will be homework, and students will have to read and/or write something every week. But the homework assignments will be flexible, and will be tailored to the pace and interests of the class.
Students are required to do the readings and complete the homework assignments in order to prepare for class.
