In the case there is an absolute need for the entire class to take the course online, Zoom will be used; and students will be properly informed. 授業概要 | This course is about skills that enable students to communicate effectively in English. Its language components are speaking, listening and short paragraph writing. A typical session of the course consists of a brief review of language patterns and activities for speaking and interactive communication. The course uses Active Learning methods through Q&A and small group work sessions. Students work in pairs to customize sample conversations by simulating pre-recorded materials from textbook. Students are also introduced to basic elements of paragraph writing and speechmaking techniques. The Q&A activities that follow individual speeches are important and play a role in the overall grading. They are meant to maximize the interaction among students. |
授業のねらい・到達目標 | At the end of the first term, students will have the skills to promptly produce verbal communication and logically express basic facts about themselves. Specifically, students will be able to: 1) Formulate questions and to give answers in English without hesitation (A-6-1); 2) Hold a conversation using appropriate language pattern and vocabulary (A-3-1); 3) Introduce oneself in a more detailed way and with confidence (A-2-1); 4) Give structured speeches that have opening, development and conclusion (A-6-1). この科目は文理学部のDP及びCPの2, 3, 6 に対応している。 |

授業の方法 | (演習) Students complete the introductory tasks of the scheduled unit beforehand. Units are completed within one class session. Some of the units start with a short quiz. ( フィードバック ) Feedback for quizzes is given during class sessions as part of the overall skill review. Feedback for speech practices is given in form of peer evaluation and individually by the instructor. Assignments that are submitted offline, are handed back to students after being checked by the instructor. |
履修条件 | ①英語習熟度別クラス分けテストを受け、その結果により振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。 ②英語習熟度別クラス分けテスト未受験の者は、GRECで振り分けられたクラスで履修すること。振り分けられたクラス以外での履修はできません。 ③「英語1」(前期)と「英語2」(後期)は同一教員による同一時限のクラスを履修すること。 ④卒業に必要な外国語科目として「英語」を選択した場合、必ずこの科目を履修すること。 |

成績評価の方法及び基準 | 試験(20%)、レポート:Two speech scripts; two short essays and four feedback assignments(30%)、授業内テスト:Four in-session quizzes(20%)、授業参画度:Participation in discussions and Q&A sessions(10%)、Speech practices(20%) Test (試験) is measured by the progress reviews of sessions 8 and 15. Report is measured by the preparation of the scripts of the speech practices and writing assignments. In-class examination (授業内テスト) is measured by the short quizzes of sessions 5, 6, 11 and 13. Participation is measured by the active engagement in Q&A sessions and group discussions. Late submissions of assignments are not accepted. |
オフィスアワー | Students can contact the instructor by sending an email or seeing him directly before/after a class session. The instructor's email address is provided on the first day of the term. Students can also visit the Teachers' room during lunch time (12:30-12:55) on Saturdays. |
備考 | The class is fun and rewarding. Students only need to be active. The instructor has an extensive experience of teaching English communication in Japan for over two decades. |
