| 授業概要 | The goal of this course is for students to cultivate comprehensive communication skills. The focus is on short paragraph writing and speech practices. Students work on these communication skills through mini writing projects and practical speech reports, while utilizing the themes and exercises of the textbook. The course uses Active Learning methods through interactive Q&A sessions and small group activities. A typical session of the course consists of a brief review of language patterns, a study of basic writing methods and activities for interactive communication. Students work in pairs to maximize both the interaction and the usage of the language. |
| 授業のねらい・到達目標 | At the end of the first term, students will be able to: 1) Formulate questions and to give answers in English without hesitation (A-6-1); 2) Hold a conversation using appropriate language pattern and vocabulary (A-3-1); 3) Express themselves coherently in short paragraph writings (A-2-1); 4) Make speech reports that have opening, development and closing (A-6-1). この科目は文理学部のDP及びCPの2, 3, 6 に対応している。 |

| 授業の方法 | (演習) In general, units of the textbook are completed within one class session. Students are required to complete the introductory tasks of the scheduled unit beforehand. Some of the units start with a short quiz. Writing assignments are used for Active Learning activities. Handouts, whenever necessary, are uploaded into the Canvas page of the course. ( フィードバック ) Feedback for quizzes is given during class sessions as part of the skill review. Feedback for speech practices is given individually by the instructor. Assignments submitted offline, are handed back after being checked by the instructor. |

| 成績評価の方法及び基準 | 試験(20%)、レポート:Speech scripts; short paragraph writings and speech feedback assignments(35%)、授業内テスト:In-session quizzes(20%)、授業参画度:Class involvement (10%)、Standard speech practice(15%) Test (試験) is measured by the progress reviews of sessions 8 and 15. Report is measured by the preparation of the scripts for speech practices and writing assignments. In-class examination (授業内テスト) is measured by the short quizzes of sessions 5, 6, 11, 12-14. Class involvement is measured by the active engagement in Q&A and open discussion sessions. Late submissions of assignments are not accepted. Students need to attend a minimum of 10 class sessions to be considered for credit evaluation. |
| オフィスアワー | Students can contact the instructor either by sending an email or seeing him directly before/after a class session. The instructor's email address is provided on the first day of the term. Students can also visit the Teachers' room during lunch time (12:30-12:55) on Saturdays. No reservation is needed. |
| 備考 | The class is fun and rewarding. Students only need to be active. The instructor has an extensive experience of teaching English communication in Japan for over two decades. |
